The Pen That Wrote in Every Color of the Rainbow

~2 min readFree

Once upon a time, in a village nestled between whispering willows and singing streams, there lived a young girl named Elara who dreamed of painting the world with words. Her family was poor, but her imagination overflowed like a bubbling fountain, spilling stories onto every scrap of parchment she could find.

One misty morning, while gathering wildflowers at the edge of the Enchanted Forest, Elara discovered a small wooden chest half-buried beneath a carpet of crimson clover. Inside rested a pen unlike any she had ever seen. Its body shimmered with opalescent light, shifting through hues of ruby red, sunset orange, buttercup yellow, meadow green, ocean blue, twilight purple, and every color in between.

Elara lifted the pen gently, and it hummed warmly against her palm. She hurried home and dipped it into her small inkwell, but when the nib touched paper, no ordinary black marks appeared. Instead, flowing ribbons of rainbow colors danced across the page, forming words that seemed to glow with their own inner light.

As Elara wrote her first story about a brave little sparrow, something extraordinary happened. The words lifted from the page, transforming into living scenes that floated in the air above her desk. She watched, wide-eyed, as the colorful sparrow fluttered around her room, its feathers matching the very hues that had birthed it.

Word of the magical pen spread through the village like wildfire through dry grass. The baker came to see his shop described in golden prose that made his bread rise higher than ever before. The old miller arrived with tears in his eyes when Elara wrote of his late wife's laughter, and for a brief moment, her joyful voice echoed through the mill once more.

But not everyone rejoiced at the pen's power. Lord Blackwood, a wealthy merchant with a heart as gray as winter fog, demanded Elara write his portrait. "Make me magnificent," he commanded, tossing a heavy purse of gold coins onto her table.

Elara accepted the task, but the pen knew Blackwood's true nature. As she wrote, the colors twisted and darkened, revealing his greed and cruelty in vivid detail. When the words lifted into the air, they showed not a magnificent lord, but a small, shriveled man surrounded by gold that turned to dust in his grasping hands.

Humiliated, Blackwood snatched the pen and fled into the forest, intending to destroy it. But the enchanted woods recognized his malicious intent. Vines caught at his cloak, and owls hooted warnings from ancient oaks. The pen grew cold in his fist, then warm, then slipped through his fingers like smoke, returning to Elara's humble cottage.

Years passed, and Elara grew old, but the pen never faded. She wrote stories of courage that gave strength to the fearful, tales of love that healed broken hearts, and chronicles of hope that lit dark corners of despair. When she finally passed, the pen vanished, but legends say it waits still, hidden somewhere in the Enchanted Forest, ready to find the next pure heart worthy of writing in every color of the rainbow.
