# The Crystal Ball That Showed Only Kindness

Once upon a time, in a kingdom nestled between whispering mountains and silver rivers, there lived a young girl named Elara who worked as a scullery maid in the royal castle. Though her days were filled with scrubbing floors and polishing silver, Elara possessed something far more precious than any treasure: a heart overflowing with kindness.

One frosty morning, while gathering firewood in the forbidden forest bordering the castle, Elara stumbled upon an ancient oak tree with roots that twisted like dragon claws. Beneath those roots lay a small wooden chest, carved with symbols that shimmered like starlight. Inside rested a crystal ball, clouded with swirling mist that seemed alive.

As Elara lifted the sphere, a gentle voice echoed in her mind. "I am the Crystal Ball of Pure Hearts. I show only kindness—both given and received."

Confused, Elara gazed into the mist. Slowly, it cleared, revealing not her own reflection, but scenes unfolding like a living tapestry. She watched herself from days past: sharing her meager bread with a starving sparrow, mending a stable boy's torn coat without being asked, singing lullabies to comfort the castle's lonely orphan servants.

But the crystal showed more. It revealed the ripple effects of her kindness: the sparrow she fed returned with its mate, building a nest that brought joy to the castle kitchens; the stable boy, inspired by her generosity, helped an elderly traveler whose horse had gone lame; the orphan children, feeling loved, grew into compassionate adults who would one day heal their kingdom.

Elara's eyes filled with tears. "I never knew my small acts mattered so much."

"Kindness is never small," the voice replied. "It is the seed from which forests grow."

Word of the magical crystal spread through the kingdom. The king himself summoned Elara, demanding to see his own reflection in the sphere. Greedy nobles, proud merchants, and vain knights all sought glimpses of their greatness. But when they peered into the crystal ball, they saw only darkness.

"Why does it show me nothing?" demanded the king, his crown askew in frustration.

"Because you have given no kindness to receive," Elara answered gently. "But it is not too late to begin."

The king, ashamed, released Elara from servitude and asked her to teach him the way of compassion. Under her guidance, he transformed from a ruler who demanded loyalty to one who earned it through generosity. The kingdom flourished as nobles competed not in wealth but in good deeds.

Years passed, and Elara became the kingdom's most trusted advisor. The crystal ball remained her constant companion, though she rarely needed to look into it anymore. She had learned that true kindness requires no magic to validate it—it is its own reward, its own illumination.

When Elara grew old and gray, she passed the crystal ball to another servant with a generous heart. And though centuries have faded the kingdom into memory, somewhere in this world, the crystal ball still waits, clouded with mist, ready to show the next pure heart the extraordinary power hidden within ordinary kindness.

For kindness, once seen, can never be unseen. And once given, it echoes through eternity.
